Saturday marked day 21, exactly three weeks into the federal government shutdown, which is slated to be the longest in history. At least 800,000 federal workers missed paychecks on Friday, and those deemed essential such as air traffic controllers and TSA staff are working without pay, or are calling out and leaving important work undone. People are furious at the Trump Administration and are now protesting.
Understandably, many are directing their anger at Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). On Wednesday, the Democratic Coalition put up the first #MitchShutdown billboard in the city of Lexington, Kentucky, and they are hoping it will become a trend across the state with the most recent billboard going up in Owensboro.
The Democratic Coalition and co-founder Scott Dworkin decided it was time to turn up the heat on Senator McConnell. McConnell has been hiding in the background in the midst of all the chaos. As a leader in the Republican party, it is time for take responsibility for the reckless president who currently resides in the White House.
Dworkin urged people saying:
‘Donald Trump still demands a racist, ineffective and mind-bogglingly expensive wall on the U.S.-Mexico border — and has even shut down the federal government to accomplish it.
‘Enter the New Democratic House – the adults in the room. Speaker Pelosi is poised to pass six spending bills that will re-open the government with no funding for Trump’s bigoted vanity project.
‘Donate today to help us pressure McConnell to oppose the wall and re-open the government.
‘We want to put up billboards in Kentucky that demand McConnell take action to end this shutdown now. These are digital billboards so once we raise enough money, then they can go up within 24 hours or so.’
Dworkin ended his plea with a call to action:
‘The administration is also spitting out pathetic, fear-mongering lies that thousands of terrorists are being apprehended at the southern border – facts that have been easily refuted by statistics from Trump’s own government.
‘We can end this shutdown right away if McConnell and enough Republicans join every Democrat in the Senate to fully fund the government, without the outrageous $5 billion for Trump’s border wall.’
As was the intention, the billboard puts Mitch McConnell front and center at a time when it is crucial to the life of the country. The time to call out Senator McConnell is long past due and his constituents want him held accountable for the destruction his party is doing.
According to MSN News:
‘Democrats say the Senate majority leader has “abdicated” his responsibility and handed the keys to the castle to Trump, particularly by blocking votes on government funding bills approved by the Democrat-led House. A half dozen or so Republican senators have indicated they might support reopening the government without border wall money.’
A large number of Americans would likely agree that the government and this country are being held hostage. Ending the shutdown is entirely possible but if there is a time to call a national emergency, one should be called to stop Mr. Trump now.
Here’s what Twitter had to say to Mitch:
