As the federal government continues to lag under the weight of the ongoing partial shutdown, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has an idea — postpone the customary State of the Union address. Donald Trump Jr. mocked her on Twitter over the proposal, although it’s not like anyone asked him.

He shared an image of Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) responding to his father’s recent primetime Oval Office address to the nation, captioning it:

‘Does Nancy Pelosi not want another chance to respond to @realDonaldTrump? Surely her response can’t be worse than last time. Did we buy the second podium yet Chuck?’

In fact, besides any political concerns, Pelosi cited security concerns over the appearance of Trump Jr.’s own father in her explanation of her request — so you’d think Trump Jr. would be thankful.

As she and others have pointed out, as part of the planning process for the event, many key security staffers and officials are absent, and those who are or would soon be present would by and large be expected to work without pay.

As House Rules Committee Chair Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) put it more bluntly than Pelosi:

‘This shutdown is ridiculous and the people tasked with protecting [Trump] and protecting us are not getting a paycheck. So it’s inappropriate to carry on with business as usual.’

The State of the Union address would normally unfold in the coming weeks. Trump has so far offered one such address while in office, early last year. He incorrectly identified an early 2017 speech of his as a State of the Union address at one point in an attempt to drag Google for coverage of the actually nonexistent speech.

Then and now, besides security concerns, Democrats have maintained deeply rooted concerns about the direction of the Trump administration’s policy — to put it lightly. Sparking the ongoing shutdown, President Trump has refused to approve any further government funding without over $5 billion for a border wall, despite the fact that there’s scant evidence for the crisis he claims necessitates such a position. Undocumented border crossings are at a low unseen in some forty years, there’s no evidence that terror groups have ever utilized the southern border for access to the United States, and even the illegal drugs the Trump team often points to mostly come into the U.S. smuggled through legal ports of entry.

Pelosi and Schumer pointed out some of these issues in the response to Trump’s Oval Office address that Trump Jr. tried to mock this week. In initial ratings numbers, the Democratic response to that speech actually scored higher than the original remarks, according to some reports.

They’ve consistently shown up for work and at this point passed half a dozen funding packages and counting, but Trump has continued to blame Democrats for the shutdown despite his own refusal to approve anything. Besides the other aforementioned concerns, Democrats have also been wary of giving Trump a platform to lie to the nation about the situation again via his State of the Union address.
