Like a toddler denied his favorite toy, Trump has continued to sit in the White House and sulk because he can’t just demand a border wall and have it done. No matter that he was told, repeatedly, during the 2016 elections that it would never happen and no matter how many Americans are now being hurt because of his tantrum, the government remains shut down because of Trump and Mitch McConnell’s refusal to put American workers about political demands.
The shutdown will soon hurt far more than the nearly one million people currently furloughed or working without paychecks. All of the economic growth Trump has claimed credit for since his election after the Obama wave is now also in jeopardy.
The New York Times warns that:
‘The administration now calculates that the shutdown reduces quarterly economic growth by 0.13 percentage points for every week that it lasts — the cumulative effect of lost work from contractors and furloughed federal employees who are not getting paid and who are investing and spending less as a result. That means that the economy has already lost nearly half a percentage point of growth from the four-week shutdown. (Last year, economic growth for the first quarter totaled 2.2 percent.)’
The president who said he was “proud” to own the shutdown and would “take the mantle” for it can rant and blame the Democrats on Twitter, but video of him claiming ownership will continue to place the onus on him. What’s more, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) will be remembered for the harm he’s caused Americans by refusing to allow Congress to do its job, as well.
