Once upon a time, Donald Trump fed the worst of his racist fanbase with promises of a great concrete wall along the southern border of the United States, an impenetrable wall that would keep brown people from taking over the country by land, air, and sea.
The lengths he’s gone to in order to make good on that promise will likely be his undoing.

The latest cover of The New Yorker depicts the corner Trump has painted himself into. Should he reopen the government to save the government workers who voted for him in 2016 from poverty and starvation, which would also prevent massively devastating effects to the U.S. economy for which he’ll surely take the blame, his far-right fan base who demands that wall will be lost.
Should he continue to hold out, the economy he’s bragged about will eventually crash, leaving him with no accomplishments save for two Supreme Court justices that any Republican president could have nominated. What’s worse, he’ll lose the Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh crowd who made up a sizable portion of his voting base.
Not only has he painted himself into a corner with his refusal to back down, but he’s also walled himself in, in a very figurative sense. He can’t possibly hope to keep Republican lawmakers on his side for much longer. Their own constituents will begin fighting back. He can’t hope to keep the wealthy on his side, they’ll lose money when 800,000 people currently going without pay can’t put money back into the economy and spend it on iPhones, at Wal-Mart, and in Home Depot.
No matter what his next move is, he’s trapped.
