President Donald Trump has undertaken a number of almost seemingly intentionally distracting measures in recent weeks and months, shutting down the federal government because he can’t get the money he wants for a border wall. However, the impeachment drumbeat is still marching on, and this Sunday during an appearance on MSNBC’s AM Joy, California Democratic Congresswoman Maxine Waters laid out her view on the current state of the controversy.

As she explained the situation, although the newly in the majority House Democrats have indicated they’ll shelve impeachment talk until after the emergence of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s final report covering his Russia investigation — it’s coming for Trump, whether he likes it or not.

She commented:

‘We have the consultants and the pundits and all of them saying — don’t talk about impeachment, that will only embolden and strengthen his supporters. His supporters are going to be there for him no matter what. We know what percentage that is, and so waiting for Mueller to come and give permission based on his report to do this is not something that I agree with, but if the leadership and others have decided that’s what they want to do, I guess that’s what they’re going to do, but I have to tell you, I believe in the final analysis they could only come to that conclusion.’

Watch below.

As she indicated, Democratic leaders including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.), House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (Md.), and even House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (N.Y.) have indicated they’d prefer to take a cautious approach to possible impeachment proceedings. For one, although they could pass the initial articles of impeachment, the president would then have to face a trial in the Senate — which currently remains controlled by Republicans. It’s not as though observers are sitting around expecting Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to suddenly announce he thinks impeaching Donald Trump is a good idea.

Still, the impeachment crusade is remaining definitely alive. Besides Waters, others in the House to explicitly call for Trump to be removed from office include new Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), who in videotaped remarks shortly after the new Democratic House majority was sworn in proclaimed that she and her colleagues would “impeach the motherfucker!” speaking of Donald Trump.

Trump and other high profile Republicans pushed back on the notion, saying her language was disgraceful. None of those who did so have apparently heard of Trump’s Twitter feed and/or the concept of hypocrisy.

Through the controversy, Trump has continued with his steady dereliction of his duty as president. He has closed down the federal government and left hundreds of thousands of workers indefinitely without pay because he’s mad he can’t fulfill one of his main hyperbolic campaign promises. To say that breaks with precedent for presidents of the United States would be an understatement.

Buzzfeed News recently claimed that getting into the more explicitly criminal side of his behavior, Trump had directed his former lawyer Michael Cohen to lie to Congress. Mueller’s office disputed certain aspects of that report without specifying which ones and, as Waters noted, thereby left the door open for the report to represent the evidence really still piling up against the president.
