The past few months have been horrendous for Donald Trump. Robert Mueller is reportedly getting closer to releasing his findings, and Trump has closed down the government which have caused his approval ratings to plummet. Yesterday word came that Robert Mueller had been investigating the Trump campaign’s ties to the NRA. Since Trump hasn’t answered any questions about his dealings with the NRA, Mueller has turned to those working on his campaign back in 2016 for answers.
Yesterday former Trump campaign aide Sam Nunberg told CNN that Mueller wanted to know what led to Donald Trump speaking at the NRA’s annual convention in 2015 even before he announced his candidacy for president. Nunberg told CNN
‘When I was interviewed by the special counsel’s office, I was asked about the Trump campaign and our dealings with the NRA.’
CNN reported that Mueller has been investigating ties between the Trump campaign and the NRA since at least last February. The NRA spent $30 million trying to get Trump elected, and considering a lot of Russian money was flowing into the organization at the time, it apparently raised a lot of red flags with Mueller. The NRA gained a lot of unwanted attention last year after it was discovered that they had strong ties to a Russian spy.
Maria Butina, a woman working as an unregistered agent of the Russian government and also a strong gun right’s activist, pled guilty last month to engaging in a conspiracy against the United States. She admitted in the District Court for the District of Columbia that she and an American cohort, conspired with and acted under the direction of a Russian government official to establish unofficial lines of communications with people able to influence U.S. politics. Apparently Butina found those ties in the NRA and now Mueller wants to know just how much the Trump campaign knew about what was going on.
