Since pomp and circumstance are apparently high on President Donald Trump’s agenda these days despite the hundreds of thousands of government workers temporarily out of the job, the question of whether or not he’ll deliver his annual State of the Union address this coming week has become a big issue. This Wednesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) asserted that the chamber would not consider a concurrent resolution to provide for the speech under her watch and the speech would therefore be indefinitely postponed.

She told the president:

‘Again, I look forward to welcoming you to the House on a mutually agreeable date when the government has reopened.’

About one-fourth of the federal government is currently closed thanks to Trump’s refusal to approve any further spending legislation without over $5 billion for a wall. That refusal has forced over 800,000 federal employees across the country to scrape by without pay, ranging from members of the U.S. Coast Guard to air traffic controllers with the Federal Aviation Administration.

He claims that creating the crisis is necessary to combat the supposed crisis of undocumented immigration over the southern border, but he has yet to find the invasion he’s so petrified of that supposedly warrants putting hundreds of thousands of Americans out in the cold.

Previously, Pelosi had insisted Trump was not welcome to give his speech on the previously set date of January 29 after it became clear that the currently unfolding government shutdown was long term. The president did not take kindly to that notion, initially simply firing off a letter that indicated he’d ban government funding from going to Pelosi’s travel as a punitive response.

More recently, he got around to addressing the issue at hand and insisted that he planned on giving his State of the Union address in the coming days despite Pelosi asking him to postpone the event. The House Speaker cited concerns including that security staff members who were even present to begin with would be expected to work without pay, complicating handling such a high profile event.

In response to Pelosi taking matters into her own hands and closing the door on Trump’s speech altogether, Trump whined to reporters:

‘I’m not surprised. It’s really a shame what’s happening with the Democrats. They’ve become radicalized. They don’t want to see crime stopped.’

He thereby continued to make a sick joke out of himself, because Democrats have repeatedly insisted that they’re all for border security improvements that aren’t a wall Trump’s boogeymen can just go around, even offering very specific proposals like for technology to scan vehicles for secret stashes that arrive at ports of entry. As they’ve pointed out, that’s how most of the illegal drugs come over the southern border.

Trump doesn’t care. He even made a new slogan (since somehow that’s a priority for him while hundreds of thousands of Americans struggle to cover basic needs) tweeting:

‘BUILD A WALL & CRIME WILL FALL! This is the new theme, for two years until the Wall is finished (under construction now), of the Republican Party. Use it and pray!’

There remains no clear path out of the shutdown with all relevant stakeholders on board.
