The longest partial federal government shutdown in American history is now over, letting other simmering issues burst back to the surface — like the upcoming 2020 presidential elections. This weekend on Twitter, President Donald Trump offered yet another spotlight on his campaign messaging and it’s… questionable to say the least.

He ranted:

‘Thank you to the Republican National Committee, (the RNC), who voted UNANIMOUSLY yesterday to support me in the upcoming 2020 Election. Considering that we have done more than any Administration in the first two years, this should be easy. More great things now in the works!’

Did he not get the hint when that same line earned actual laughter from the United Nations General Assembly? Those gathered in the hall listening to him speak at the most recent assembly weren’t exactly partisan hacks or inexperienced pundits. They were high ranking diplomatic representatives from nations all around the world — and when he claimed to have done more than “almost any administration” in American history, laughs rang out.

Trump claimed that those present were laughing with him and not at him, seemingly refusing to acknowledge that maybe the line he’d offered didn’t match up to reality after all.

He’s certainly distinguished himself among hundreds of years worth of American presidents, but not for the reasons he seems to want people to believe. That just concluded shutdown was his doing, since he refused to approve any further government funding for over a month without over $5 billion for a border wall blocking off Mexico that the (mostly imaginary) criminals he’s so scared of can just go around.

Outside of his imagination, hundreds of thousands of federal employees and many, many more government contractors were plunged into weeks of financial turmoil. This past Friday, he finally agreed to reopen the government (through the middle of next month) without any wall funding.

Still, he’s certainly not abandoned the concept of a wall, indicating he’s willing to have the government shut down again when funding next runs out if he still hasn’t gotten what he wanted. His wall is no doubt on his mind when he mentions supposed “great things” that are coming soon from his administration, although there is no threat of “invasion” that it would address.
