Every since Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez came into prominence Republicans have been scared of her. They don’t like that she refuses to bow down to elder statesman or the way she always speaks her mind. Well today she again had the chance to set a Republican straight after he made a condescending comment toward her. Bloomberg reported that Republican Mark Meadows was complaining during a House Oversight Committee meeting that lawmakers need more than three days notice before they are required to attend questioning of witnesses by Democratic staff lawyers. They would like to have five days notice instead. To which AOC responded
‘I don’t believe we need five days if lawmakers are doing their jobs.’
Meadows then sniped back that “I can tell you on all of this at this particular point, we’re all wanting to cooperate. Sometimes our schedules, you know, we’re not just sitting around eating bonbons, waiting for the call of anybody.”
After his comment AOC really got him when she asked the chairman of the committee, Chairman Elijah Cummings of Maryland, whether Republicans gave Democrats ample notice for such matters during the last congressional session, when they ran the committee. Cummings told her that Republicans didn’t give them five days notice and AOC thanked him for the answer.
So this was another case of Republicans trying to swing every political advantage their own way. They expect to govern one way when they’re in charge, but try to change the rules when they’re not. It looks like AOC is on to their game right out of the gate, and won’t let them get away with anything. It also looks like Republicans are right to be scared of AOC.
