Donald Trump’s relationship to Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has always been puzzling, more so because it is so far out of the experience of most people. Then, POTUS spent several hours with the former KGB officer in Helsinki, Poland — alone except for the translator, and Trump’s relationship began to draw more attention. That meeting moved the situation from puzzling to threatening.
Now, we find out that Trump and Putin met along the sidelines of the Group 20 (G-20) summit last year without even a U.S. translator. The Buenos Aires, Argentina meeting was just a couple of months ago. As usual, the president did not invite any of his aides to join them to take notes or as a technical support.
Putin does not usually speak English when he appears in public, but he can both understand and speak it. The Russian president brought a translator to the meeting, and Trump brought First Lady Melania Trump. She speaks five languages according to the president: English, French, German, Italian, Serbian, and Slovenian.
The Financial Times spoke to a Russian official about the meeting. Apparently, they only met for around 15 minutes. During that time, they talked about Syria and a military issue between Russian forces and the Ukrainian navy.
According to the White House, Trump and Putin had some “informal conversation.” However, the man currently sitting in the Oval Office released no details about their meeting.
Originally, the two men had been scheduled for a more formal meeting, but decided against it. For some reason, the man currently ruling his country from his Moscow office left Argentina early due to the Moscow and Ukraine conflict. Trump and Putin also scheduled their next, more formal meeting.
Immediately prior to the G-20 Summit, the Russian military hit two of Ukraine’s ships and hurt two members of the crew in the Kerch Strait, which is located near Crimea. Then, the Russians took command of the two ships and also a tugboat.
The strait is Ukraine’s only shipping access point for that portion of its country. Russia seized Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, and the result has been serious sanctions against Moscow, but Trump has loosened some of them.
The interesting part of Trump’s fondness for Putin has been that over time, the U.S. president has shown his preference for Russia over American interests. He even went to the extent that he took interpreter’s notes from their meetings and destroyed them. The newly-installed House Democrats have spoken about calling the interpreter to testify before various committees.
According to a statement released by White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders CNBC reported:
‘President Trump looks forward to having President Putin to Washington after the first of the year, and he is open to visiting Moscow upon receiving a formal invitation.’
The Russian president was a keynote speaker at the Brazil, Russia, India, and China (BRIC) economic summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. He released a statement indicating that he was “ready” for another Trump meeting:
‘We are ready for such meetings. We are ready to invite President Trump to Moscow. Be my guest. He has such an invitation, I told him that.’
