Donald Trump’s lies and gaslighting are catching up with him. After his own intelligence chiefs testified in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee and published the Worldwide Threat Assessment directly refuting Trump’s statements about U.S. troops in Syria, he tried to tell the American people that the “fake news media” was simply reporting their statements inaccurately to make him look bad.
On Friday morning, he continued saying the same things his intelligence chiefs have already refuted.
The Worldwide Threat Assessment of the U.S. Intelligence Community states:
‘ISIS still commands thousands of fighters in Iraq and Syria, and it maintains eight branches, more than a dozen networks, and thousands of dispersed supporters around the world, despite significant leadership and territorial losses. The group will exploit any reduction in CT pressure to strengthen its clandestine presence and accelerate rebuilding key capabilities, such as media production and external operations. ISIS very likely will continue to pursue external attacks from Iraq and Syria against regional and Western adversaries, including the United States.’
Trump can continue to say that his intelligence chiefs are all in agreement with him, but that simply isn’t true. They testified in person, live on camera, that ISIS is still a threat in Syria and that pulling troops from the area will be dangerous for the United States and make the 18 years of fighting our troops have done there useless.
Trump’s own party members in the Senate disagree with him, as well. Axios reports that:
‘The Senate voted 68-23 Thursday to advance a measure opposing the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria and Afghanistan — an amendment added to a broader Middle East policy bill expected to easily pass the Senate next week.’
