Donald Trump was the first president in decades to refuse to release his tax returns…even though he promised all of us he would after he got elected. Sadly that was just another one of his thousands of lies to the American public. If House Democrats get their way though, we won’t have to worry about him, or any other president, getting away with hiding their tax returns because the House is working on a bill that would require presidents to release them.
The bill known as H.R.1 would require presidents and vice presidents, and major-party candidates for those offices, to disclose 10 years of tax returns with the Federal Election Commission. The agency would then make the documents publicly available. The House Ways and Means oversight subcommittee is expected to start the hearing on the bill Feb. 7.
The leaders of the Congressional Progressive Caucus are pushing for H.R.1 to be updated to require the disclosure of business tax returns in addition to personal tax filings. If only we had this bill in place before the 2016 election we may have been able to catch a lot of Trump’s ties to Russia before we ever went to the polls. If that were the case we most likely wouldn’t have a Russian lead traitor running the White House right now.
In another matter, House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal (D-MA) is expected to try to obtain Trump’s tax returns by requesting them from the Treasury Department. A provision in the federal tax code gives the chairman of Congress’s tax committees the authority to request the documents from Treasury and view them in a closed session.
If that happens Trump will hit the roof. He’s desperate to keep us from seeing his taxes for some reason. One has to wonder what he’s hiding in there. Could they be what takes down his presidency?
