Co-executive Director of the Center for Popular Democracy confronted Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) during the hearing for then-Supreme Court nominee Justice Brett Kavanaugh. She literally stepped onto the elevator he was riding to tell her story. That took guts, and now newly elected Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is giving her a well-deserved reward.
Flake was headed toward the heated Senate Judiciary Committee to vote on Kavanaugh after another woman risked her career, her family’s safety, and her own private life. Dr. Christine Blasey Ford credibly claimed that Kavanaugh sexually molested her while they were in high school. Here is what Archila said to make Flake decide to ask for an investigation into Blasey Ford’s claim:
‘WOW — CNN shows a sexual assault victim absolutely shredding
@JeffFlake for announcing he’ll vote for Kavanaugh. “You’re telling all women that they don’t matter, that they should just stay quiet because if they tell you what happened to them you are going to ignore them.”‘

The representative invited Archila to attend the State of the Union Address as her guest. Archila is in Ocasio-Cortez’s district, and she explained to The Intercept:
‘I just feel particularly moved that in her first participation in the State of the Union she is inviting me to join and inviting that moment of the elevator, my confrontation with the men who do not understand the life of women and the lives of people who are not in power, that she’s inviting that into the imagination of people again.
‘What you are doing is allowing someone who actually violated a woman to sit on the Supreme Court. This is not tolerable. You have children in your family. Think about them.’
