On Tuesday, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that he plans to scale back a $77 million dollar bullet train project, which came as a shock to many across the state. According to The Los Angeles Times:
‘Newsom said Wednesday that while the state has the capacity to complete the first leg in the Central Valley, extending the rail line to Southern California and the Bay Area would “cost too much and, respectfully, take too long.”’
Of course, Mr. Trump had something to say about it on Twitter, complaining about federal money spent at the same time that he wants to waste $5.7 billion of government money for a wall although he has only been able to secure $1.38 billion from Congress for physical barriers.
The president tweeted:
‘California has been forced to cancel the massive bullet train project after having spent and wasted many billions of dollars. They owe the Federal Government three and a half billion dollars. We want that money back now. Whole project is a “green” disaster!’
Trump recently proposed a budget of $23 million to Congress for border security in the next fiscal year. He says he intends to secure the funds to build a wall elsewhere.
On Wednesday, the president said that he is leaning towards signing compromise legislation to avoid another government shutdown, which would happen on Friday at midnight if a deal isn’t reached. The new border security agreement would not deprive Trump and Republicans of a wall, but would give more money for border fencing and immigration detention.
