Nearly every Republican congressperson has been extremely weak ever since Donald Trump took office. It seems like none of them want to stand up to him, even though he’s running roughshod over our democracy. But it seems like Trump’s fake emergency declaration has returned just a tiny bit of spine to at least a couple of GOP senators. One being North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis. Today he said that he would be voting to support a resolution blocking Trump’s declaration and Trump will be hitting the roof for sure.
In a Washington Post op-ed he said
‘I would vote in favor of the resolution disapproving of the president’s national-emergency declaration, if and when it comes before the Senate.’
He went on to say that there was “no intellectual honesty” (like we didn’t already know that) for Republicans if they previously criticized President Obama’s executive actions but don’t oppose Trump’s on the border wall. He noted that several of the Democratic candidates for president have already talked about using Trump’s precedent to advance their own policies against the wishes of the GOP.
He also wrote
‘As a U.S. senator, I cannot justify providing the executive with more ways to bypass Congress. As a conservative, I cannot endorse a precedent that I know future left-wing presidents will exploit to advance radical policies that will erode economic and individual freedoms.’
This is pretty big news. If all 47 Democrats vote for the resolution they would only need to flip four Republican senators in order for the resolution to pass the Senate. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) are both viewed as likely yes votes, which would make Tillis the third Republican defector. We would only need one more Republican with a little bit of spine left to stand up to Trump so we can get this passed.
