During the 2018 midterms, Donald Trump warned his supporters that if Republicans lost the House, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) would have power over government spending. As it turns out, she has even more power than Trump told his rabid crowds.

On Thursday, Waters called on the House to make Trump’s finances related to his now-defunct charity, the Trump Foundation. Waters believes he may have used the charity to avoid paying taxes. A judge ruled in December that Trump and his children used the money for personal expenses.

According to POLITICO:

‘The House Financial Services chairwoman hinted to reporters on Thursday that she may even have a lead in the form of a letter “from somebody who told me about a situation that they want to talk with me more about.”’

The charity was investigated by New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood and was sued for millions of dollars in restitution. She found that the charity had no board of directors, no staff, and hadn’t had a board meeting for 20 years.

‘Trump agreed to shut down his personal charity in December following a lawsuit brought by the New York attorney general that alleged the president and his children used the foundation for their personal and political benefit.’

Trump’s charity was discovered to have used donor funds to pay off lawsuits and buy luxury items, such as a portrait of Trump. Underwood referred to the foundation as “little more than a checkbook” for Trump and his family.

‘Underwood said the foundation also made a series of questionable donations to other charitable organizations to settle legal claims involving Trump businesses, including his South Florida Mar-a-Lago retreat, while another donation went toward promoting Trump’s international hotels. The attorney general’s office also alleged that Trump handed over control of the charity to his presidential campaign in 2016, as it made strategic donations to charities and events in key campaign states like Iowa and New Hampshire.
