In an unsurprising turn of events, it seems neo-Nazis and other racist, fascist organizations not only overwhelmingly support Republican candidates, they actually put their time and effort into helping them get elected.
As it happens, Bennett Bressman, a former staffer for GOP Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts’ 2018 election campaign. Bressman has long been known in white nationalist groups under the handle of “bress22.”
Governor Ricketts and staff deny any knowledge of Bressman’s comments or racist views, despite his having worked on the campaign for over seven months:
‘I am shocked and horrified to learn that this former staffer made these statements and I had no idea he harbored these feelings. He never expressed these views to me. I condemn these statements and this hateful worldview, which do not reflect my beliefs or the beliefs of Nebraskans.’
The leader of Identity Evopra, Patrick Casey, had this to say:
‘Today I decided to get involved with my county’s Republican party. The GOP is essentially the White man’s party at this point (it gets Whiter every election cycle), so it makes far more sense for us to subvert it than to create our own party.’
He also added this advice, for fellow racists wanting to “help” the Republican party:
‘Present as a Trump supporter/nationalist. No need to broadcast your radical views.’
It’s hard to believe an political organization, which relies on its reputation, could be incompetent enough to hire someone to help on an important campaign without at least first making sure they didn’t have over 3,400 racist, sexist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, (etc., etc., etc.) posts online waiting to be “leaked.” However, that is just what Governor Ricketts wants us to believe.
When your party is the go-to party for the dregs of humanity, denials like this ring hollow, especially when your party’s president calls the likes of Bressman “very fine people.”
