President Donald Trump has long proven that his vitriol knows no bounds, and CNN’s chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta is among those who are fed up with his incessant hatred.

This weekend, Trump yet again went after former U.S. Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.), who died of brain cancer last year. McCain is widely respected, at least among Republican circles, but Trump doesn’t care. On Saturday, he proudly rattled off a list of “stains” on McCain’s legacy, griping about the late leader’s role in a number of big stories the president’s been personally involved in. Trump included “Spreading the fake and totally discredited Dossier” and his “thumbs down on repeal and replace,” referring to his dramatic opposition to Republican plans to throw out the Affordable Care Act that helped ensure their efforts failed.

Acosta incredulously noted:

‘Trump still attacking McCain even after his death. Been covering Trump for three years now. Will never quite understand how the GOP tolerates his attacks on McCain, Bushes and Romney. The GOP just shrugs its shoulders.’

Trump relentlessly went after McCain while the Senator was still alive, too, from his dismissal of the legitimacy of McCain’s military service thanks to his time as a prisoner of war to an infatuation with tearing him apart because he dared not fall in line with the Senate Republican caucus’s healthcare policy efforts.

McCain, in return, often slammed Trump’s foreign policy efforts to cozy up to dictators like Russian President Vladimir Putin, and the president was not invited to McCain’s funeral.

The late Senator’s daughter Meghan was among those to call Trump out for whining about a recently deceased American war hero, posing the public question to the president:

‘No one will ever love you the way they loved my father…. I wish I had been given more Saturday’s with him. Maybe spend yours with your family instead of on twitter obsessing over mine?’

She’s explicitly criticized Trump plenty herself, having asserted at her father’s funeral that America is “already great” in a clear rebuke of the president’s trademark call to “make America great again.”

Check out Twitter’s response to Acosta below. Trump’s criticism of McCain is certainly not the only concern the GOP has by and large shrugged its shoulders at. They’ve stuck with Trump through everything from credible sexual assault allegations to endless criticism of immigrants with no tangible basis besides racism.
