As the United States and world continue to deal with threats ranging from ballooning federal debt to belligerent dictators, President Donald Trump is continuing to maintain “Attack John McCain” at the top of his priorities list. The late Republican Senator’s daughter Meghan responded to Trump spending the weekend lambasting the widely respected McCain for issues ranging from his refusal to support GOP efforts to repeal ObamaCare to his part in sharing the infamous Steele dossier with the federal government.
After Trump threw around lies about the timing of McCain sharing former British spy Christopher Steele’s collection of info on the eventual president’s team’s connections to Russia, Meghan responded quite simply:
‘My father lives rent free in your head.’
She eventually deleted that tweet, but not before her opposition to the president could again become clear, indicating one of many challenges Trump faces if he hopes for re-election. There are still some Republicans who refuse to get on board with his agenda, no matter how good he wants to falsely claim his approval ratings are.
Trump had claimed that the late Senator sent the Steele dossier to the media in an effort to have it distributed to the public before the 2016 elections, but that is false. McCain didn’t even get a copy of the dossier until after the election, and he never personally gave it to the media. His former aide David Kramer has said he gave the dossier to the media in December 2016 — again, after the election. Buzzfeed published the allegations the following month, as then president-elect Trump prepared to be sworn into office.
No matter the reality of the situation, Trump stuck to his criticism to the point of claiming McCain was last in his class at the Naval Academy, which is quite simply false.
The day before, he’d used the opportunity of a Fox News segment featuring former independent counsel Ken Starr to attack McCain over his dramatic, late-night opposition to the Senate GOP caucus’s plans to dump the Affordable Care Act, rattling off a list of “stains” on the late Senator’s legacy.
Meghan responded to Trump then, too, bluntly saying he should stop obsessing over her family while ignoring his own.
She posed the public question:
‘No one will ever love you the way they loved my father…. I wish I had been given more Saturday’s with him. Maybe spend yours with your family instead of on twitter obsessing over mine?’
The feud between the Trumps and McCains goes back all the way to the beginning of Trump’s 2016 presidential bid. In 2015, he dismissed the significance of the late Senator’s military service because he had spent time as a prisoner of war.
In the time since, McCain spent a considerable deal of time lambasting Trump for his foreign policy focus on cozying up with dictators like Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Even as McCain died from brain cancer last year, Trump never let up with his harsh criticism of the longtime Senator. Meghan has an apparent idea about why that is, sharing a column this Sunday that asserted her father “represents the man that Donald Trump cannot ever be.”
