The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) filed its lawsuit to obtain Mueller’s report that was just handed over to Barr. It was filed under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). The suit requests the report’s non-exempt information due to the “overwhelming public interest” into Mueller’s report:
‘The public has a right to know the full scope of Russian interference in the 2016 United States presidential election and whether the President of the United States played any role in such interference, EPIC said in its lawsuit, which was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.’
It continued, writing that “the public has a right to know:’
‘The public also has a right to know whether the President unlawfully obstructed any investigation into Russian election interference or related matters. The requested records are vital to the public’s understanding of these issues and to the integrity of the political system of the United States.’
Trump and his conservative supporters, including those on the Fox network, have been working to discredit Robert Mueller, his investigation, and the FBI for over a year. They have used terms such as “witch hunt” with such frequency that the term has burned into America’s consciousness.
Democrats, including those chairing House investigative committees, have forcefully called for Mueller’s report to be made public.
EPIC’s FOIA request is for any documents including the final report and all related materials accompanying the report. This was not the first EPIC lawsuit against the Department of Justice for information about the Russians’ interference into the U.S. presidential election. One lawsuit involved the FBI’s response to Russia’s cyber attacks. It included a request into the ongoing election cybersecurity failures.
