Jared Kushner Senate Intel Committee Testimony Announcement Enrages Feeble GOP

Donald Trump may be ready to crow about “no collusion!” but the truth is that the Barr summary of the Mueller reports leaves Americans with far more questions than answers. The Senate Intelligence Committee, while waiting for the full Mueller report to be released to them as well as the public, is continuing to do its investigative job.

On Thursday, Trump’s son-in-law and adviser, Jared Kushner, appeared in front of the committee to answer their questions. It’s not yet clear which of the many scandals in which Kushner is currently embroiled were under discussion. It may have been the 2016 Trump Tower meeting, where Kushner was present. It could be the many corrections Kushner was forced to make to his request for security clearance. Perhaps it’s the memo from Trump’s former chief of staff, John Kelly, saying that Trump ordered his security clearance to be granted despite concerns. It could also be the communications Kushner has conducted with foreign contacts over social media apps.

Buzzfeed News reports that:

‘Members of the Senate Intelligence Committee interviewed Jared Kushner behind closed doors on Thursday morning, less than a week after the attorney general sent his summary of the Mueller investigation to Congress.

‘Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and a senior White House adviser, exited the committee’s secure space just before noon Thursday and did not answer questions. The meeting, which included several senators as well as staff, began at around 9:30 a.m.’

Most likely, considering the time of the appearance, the questions were related to the Trump Tower meeting and Kushner’s attempts to set up backchannel communications with the Kremlin. Both of those facts have called Barr’s summary of Mueller’s report into question.

‘Committee staff first interviewed Kushner in July 2017. After that interview, Kushner said he told staff about his contacts with Russians during and after the campaign, adding that he “did not collude with Russia” and did not “know of anyone else in the campaign who did so.” Since then, Warner and other senators have advocated for Kushner to return to speak before the full committee, possibly in public.’

Despite Trump’s eagerness to declare the Mueller investigation concluded and himself exonerated, questions that remain unanswered could be answered by people like Kushner, who is close to the inner workings of the Trump administration and were integral parts of his campaign. The question of obstruction of justice is the most heavily questioned conclusion that Trump’s Attorney General William Barr, and not Mueller, determined.

‘Mueller also “left unresolved” the question of whether Trump obstructed justice during the investigation, leaving the determination to Barr, who “concluded that the evidence developed during the Special Counsel’s investigation is not sufficient to establish that the President committed an obstruction-of-justice offense.”
