After Michael Cohen’s testimony in front of Congress, which he gave with numerous pieces of evidence to back up his claims of illegal campaign donations by the current president of the United States, the question of whether or not Trump should face impeachment should have been settled. Trump and his cronies in Congress have insisted that Cohen is not credible, but evidence is hard to ignore.

Lanny Davis and Michael Monico, attorneys for Cohen, stated in a letter to Congress that Cohen has discovered a large number of files, around 14 million of them, on a hard drive that contains proof of illegal campaign donations from China. They requested time for Cohen to sort through them before beginning his three-year prison term, according to CNN.

‘Cohen is asking for additional time — and congressional help — to persuade the Southern District of New York to allow him to postpone reporting to jail in order to review the files. Cohen’s lawyers wrote in the letter, obtained by CNN, they hoped Cohen would receive a reduced term, and that the May 6 date Cohen is scheduled to report to prison “will be substantially postponed while he is fully cooperating with prosecutors and Congress.”‘

It is unclear at this point whether or not the files could be seized regardless of any decision by Congress to request more time for Cohen to sort through the files and remove any privileged information before submitting the proof of illegal campaign donations to Congress. Cohen’s attorneys wrote that it would not be possible for him to do so in the amount of time he has left, which is less than 30 days.

‘We hope that this memorandum demonstrates that Mr. Cohen needs to be readily accessible and immediately available to provide ongoing assistance to Congress in order for it to fulfill its executive branch oversight responsibilities. Mr. Cohen was only recently able to access a hard drive with important documents…However, with 30 days left before he surrenders to prison, time is no longer a luxury he is capable of.’

The letter from Cohen’s attorneys was sent to Democrats in Congress, but no Republicans. It’s obvious to anyone who’s been paying attention why that would be. The GOP members of Congress are not concerned, suddenly, with having a criminal in the White House since the current one is not black or a Democrat.

‘It’s not clear which committees received letters from Cohen, or what they plan to do in response. The Democrats who lead the three committees where Cohen testified declined comment or did not respond to requests for comment. Cohen’s attorneys wrote the letters were not sent to Republicans, but they were “willing to do so” if any were interested in the information he could provide.’
