If the Russians had not interfered in the 2016 presidential elections and former FBI director James Comey had not trashed FBI protocol and brought up news of Secretary Hillary Clinton’s emails, she might be president now. Even so, she is a reminder of who America is and what we value, especially at moments like this. Here is how it is done.
Secretary Clinton tweeted about “our ability as human beings to unite for a higher purpose:”
‘My heart goes out to Paris. Notre Dame is a symbol of our ability as human beings to unite for a higher purpose—to build breathtaking spaces for worship that no one person could have built on their own. I wish France strength and shared purpose as they grieve and rebuild.’
Clinton reminded us that no one person alone could have built this historical cathedral created by men and chisels, stone and timber. The building began in 1163, and its maintenance was evident by the haunting scaffolding that remained standing as the nearly 850 years of history surrounded it fell in ashes.
Those in Paris said appeared that the basic structure might survive the voracious fire that ate away at huge oaken timbers that had hardened nearly into iron. The religious relics, one from the crown of thorns that Jesus wore when he died, have been rescued.
Some television newscasters speculated that out of the ashes, a new-found return to religion might grow. Clinton wished France “strength and shared purpose” as they “grieve and rebuild.”
