Donald Trump thought the children who attended the annual White House Easter Egg Roll might enjoy a speech about the U.S. military war machine. When that did not appear to go over well with the little ones, the president tried another tact. He discussed the economy and how low the unemployment numbers were. Then it got really strange.
POTUS tried to make a joke saying that he did not “remember the first one (Egg Roll)” 141 years ago in 1878. He probably appeared that old to the children, so they did not get it. Trump’s lame joke went like this:
‘This is 141 years that we’ve been doing this. I don’t remember the first one.’
Trump gave his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, a scarce public compliment for organizing the event. She broke into one of her rare smiles as he went on to thank the White House Historical Association, that worked with her on the Egg Roll. In addition, he thanked the Marine Corps Band.
Then, the commander-in-chief thanked “a group of people that do a wonderful job:”
‘I love them, I know they like me, too. It’s the egg farmers of this country, the egg farmers. And they brought thousands and thousands of eggs. I don’t know if you can use them all, but I have a feeling with these young, very ambitious children, they’re going to find a reason.’
The man who occasionally sits in the Oval Office did one of his special combos “Happy Easter” and his handling of the economy:
‘Maybe most importantly, I want to wish everybody a very happy Easter. Our country is doing fantastically well. Probably the best its ever done economically. We’re setting records on stock markets, we’re setting records with jobs, and unemployment numbers are the lowest they’ve ever been.’
Then, the president moved from the holiest Christian holiday to the U.S. military’s war machine:
‘And do we love our military? Our military’s building, is literally being completely rebuilt. All with great product, the best product in the world, and you know where it’s made? In the USA.’
At last, Trump told the crowd it was time to start the festivities:
‘So, again, happy Easter. Enjoy yourselves, and I’m coming down right now to be with you.’
As the president and first lady descended that stairs from the balcony, MSNBC ‘s host Craig and some of his guests noted how odd it was to have the giant Easter bunny standing next to the president. The group started a debate about whether the bunny had always worn glasses. Given that he was 141 years old, the celebratory rabbit probably needed them.
MSNBC’s Pentagon correspondent Hans Nichols volunteered that he had attended the Egg Roll celebration when he was a child. The event has been open to children of members of the military and the media in the past.
Melvin kept a straight face as the camera turned back on him:
“Well, there you have it. The whole scene actually a bit surreal.’
