President Donald Trump continues to leave his mark on the U.S. presidency, preparing to speak to the annual convention of the National Rifle Association (NRA) this Friday for what will be the at least fourth year in a row since ascending to the national stage as a presidential candidate in 2016. Vice President Mike Pence will also speak at the organization’s convention this year, as he has also done in the past.

On Twitter on Thursday, Trump seemed exuberant about the possibility of a captive audience to spew more of his nonsense to, sharing:

‘Look forward to seeing everyone in Indianapolis, Indiana tomorrow!’

His speeches in years past have been marked by controversy, to say the least. In 2017, he told those assembled that he was “going to come through for you” in the White House, although in many areas the most “victory” the organization can claim under Trump is helping keep gun control from moving forward. By and large, their legislative efforts have run into roadblocks. Even in the Republican-controlled Florida, authorities went so far off the NRA’s preferred path with their increased restrictions on firearms in the wake of the infamous Parkland school shooting that the organization launched a lawsuit.

Still, in 2018 Trump offered similar contentious nonsense in favor of gun rights, telling the crowd at the time:

‘Your Second Amendment rights are under siege, but they will never, ever be under siege as long as I’m your president.’

Perhaps more pointedly, he also took aim at the United Kingdom and France for supposedly going down the wrong path on guns. Trump mimicked the shootings that rocked Paris in 2015 and suggested that the terror attacks that claimed the lives of some 150 people across the city could have been stopped if people had guns. In other words, Trump thinks some lone ranger-style “good guy with a gun” could have stopped an internationally planned attack carried out by a large group of people at a whole host of locations across a city with over 2 million people in it. And somehow, he wants us to take him seriously.

This time around, his speech will no doubt include a lot more of the same. It will be proceeding under the shadow of a brand new lawsuit demanding the Federal Election Commission take action against the NRA for alleged massive campaign finance law violations associated with recent elections. They’ve alleged to have used shell companies to skirt contribution limits.
