While the United States languishes through issues like growing violence against minorities, lack of access to key health care, and more, President Donald Trump’s concerns are with the NFL draft, which took place earlier this past week. This Saturday morning, he tweeted in support of San Francisco 49ers pick Nick Bosa, who apologized for past remarks on social media he acknowledged were “insensitive.” Trump would rather the player not apologize but instead take calling controversial former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick a “clown” as a part of his personality he should be proud of. This is the kind of thing the president of the United States thinks is among the most important!
He ranted on Twitter:
‘Congratulations to Nick Bosa on being picked number two in the NFL Draft. You will be a great player for years to come, maybe one of the best. Big Talent! San Francisco will embrace you but most importantly, always stay true to yourself. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!’
Trump has long railed against the NFL for the players who, following Kaepernick’s lead, have peacefully protested during pre-game performances of the national anthem in an effort to bring attention to discrimination against black Americans. To Trump, the protesting players are “sons of bitches” who should be fired.
Discussing his 2016 decision to call the then-49ers quarterback a “clown,” Bosa said at a press conference following his NFL draft selection:
‘I mean, I respect what he’s done. If it empowers anybody, then he’s doing a good thing. I apologize for that.’
In other words, just to be clear — the president of the United States is going out of his way to tell a private citizen that he shouldn’t apologize for calling someone he happens to disagree with a “clown.” This is the level to which the Trump administration has dragged the United States.
It serves as a prelude to what will no doubt be a lot more namecalling where this nonsense came from. Trump has already publicly referred to Democratic presidential candidates former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders as “Sleepy Joe” and “Crazy Bernie” respectively, apparently hoping to base a national policy platform on schoolyard-style bullying. What could go wrong.
