Under the shadow of the final report from Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation and the numerous other issues enveloping the Trump team, the United States continues to hurtle towards the 2020 presidential election. A brand new poll shows the apparent uphill battle Trump might have to wage if he wants to get anywhere close to a second term in office, with former Vice President Joe Biden with a full eight percent more support among voters than Donald Trump. Biden had 42 percent of those polled, while Trump had only 34 percent. Although Biden has not officially announced his candidacy as of Wednesday, he’s expected to soon after spending a considerable amount of time inching closer that direction via public statements.

There’s an important caveat — in the POLITICO/Morning Consult poll, a full 19 percent of respondents said they did not know who they’d vote for if faced with a choice of Trump or Biden come late 2020. Additionally, five percent claimed they wouldn’t even vote in the presented hypothetical case. That’s obviously overall more than enough to swing the election one way or the other, and so there’s still a long road ahead — but the numbers make it clear who’s starting out ahead. Unsurprisingly, Americans by and large are not on board with the idea of continuing with a national leadership that’s heavy on lies, antagonism of anyone and everyone, and angry tweets while remaining light on major legislative overhaul that makes the lives of Americans better in tangible ways.

Trump has actually already addressed the possibility that he’ll face Biden come November 2020. On Twitter after Biden seemed to put himself among those “running” for president as opposed to those who just might run before quickly correcting himself, Trump whined:

‘Joe Biden got tongue tied over the weekend when he was unable to properly deliver a very simple line about his decision to run for President. Get used to it, another low I.Q. individual!’

The jab is ironic coming from the guy who, as president of the United States, posted a lie to social media about how many “hamberders” he had served the most recent national college football champions. Are there even any more ways for that particular public statement to have been wrong? How are we supposed to trust a guy who’s such a habitual liar that he lies about the number of hamburgers he serves a group of people?

Biden is hardly the only Democrat jockeying to unseat the perpetually lying Trump. Declared candidates stretch across the whole left side of the modern ideological spectrum, including everyone from Sens. Bernie Sanders (Vt.) and Elizabeth Warren (Mass.) to South Bend, Indiana’s Mayor Pete Buttigieg and former Texas Congressman Beto O’Rourke.

In the current RealClearPolitics average of polls measuring support among Democratic presidential primary voters, the top five candidates are Biden, Sanders, Sen. Kamala Harris (Calif.), Buttigieg, and Warren, in that order. Biden is about six percent ahead of Sanders, who have an estimated 29.3 and 23 percent of the support, respectively.

Seeing Trump have to answer for his four years of chaos via the eventual final vote totals might be great.
