President Donald Trump is continuing his campaign to sucker up to dictatorial world leaders. This Friday, he spoke on the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin for over an hour and promptly rushed to Twitter to extol the conversation and the leader, sharing:

‘Had a long and very good conversation with President Putin of Russia. As I have always said, long before the Witch Hunt started, getting along with Russia, China, and everyone is a good thing, not a bad thing. We discussed Trade, Venezuela, Ukraine, North Korea, Nuclear Arms Control and even the “Russian Hoax.” Very productive talk!’

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders backed this account up speaking to reporters, claiming that the conversation’s “primary focus” was getting help to people in Venezuela who are suffering through a power struggle pitting President Nicolas Maduro against opposition leader Juan Guaidó, whose side launched a “coup” attempt to force Maduro out of power this past week. He has refused to cede control in the wake of what’s been widely taken as a sham election he “won” last year, and under Venezuelan standard, that leaves current national legislative body leader Guaidó in charge, at least temporarily.

There’s a deeply set irony in Trump attempting to get Russia to help respond to the conflict. Vladimir Putin is in power right now following an election widely regarded as riddled with fraud that he won after jailing opposition. That appears to matter much less to Trump than the political crisis in Venezuela to the point of him breaking with security adviser directives and congratulating Putin over his electoral “victory” in an infamous past phone conversation.

The double standard fits into a much wider portrait of Trump ceding to Putin’s interests. Sanders shared this week that Trump and Putin discussed the “fact” that there was “no collusion, which I’m pretty sure both leaders were both very well aware of long before this call took place.” Although that’s a nice narrative for the Trump team, calling it a misrepresentation of the facts would be a gross understatement. In the face of mountains of evidence of the Trump team’s willingness and readiness to align themselves with the Kremlin’s meddling in U.S. elections, Special Counsel Robert Mueller did not conclude that there was no collusion, only that there’s no criminally prosecutable conspiracy. The facts of the Russian meddling remain — but that’s of seemingly little concern to Trump, who Sanders did not indicate discussed it with Putin this week.

All Trump’s got is his familiar meaningless campaign chatter, touting:

‘We can all agree that AMERICA is now #1. We are the ENVY of the WORLD — and the best is yet to come!’
