President Donald Trump’s priority list features elements way up top like… uh… defending the “FREEDOM OF SPEECH!!” of people who spread false and derogatory ideas about minorities and other often ostracized interests. After Facebook announced a ban on notorious hate-peddlers like Alex Jones and his buddy Paul Joseph Watson, which will also affect Instagram, the president took to Twitter to shout:

‘I am continuing to monitor the censorship of AMERICAN CITIZENS on social media platforms. This is the United States of America — and we have what’s known as FREEDOM OF SPEECH! We are monitoring and watching, closely!!’

The tweet went up on Friday, the day after Facebook announced their latest crackdown on false information that could be weaponized against targeted individuals and interests. Although it wasn’t immediately clear what specific posts may have been the last straw (there are plenty of options), the company shared:

‘We’ve always banned individuals or organizations that promote or engage in violence and hate, regardless of ideology. The process for evaluating potential violators is extensive.’

In other words, the president of the United States is literally standing on a metaphorical soapbox in front of the world and sticking up for the supposedly oh-so-persecuted interests out there facing backlash for peddling “violence and hate.” Good times.

Outside of the specific incidents of these people spreading outright lies and touting plans like shooting up opposing leaders, there remains no evidence of some kind of widespread crackdown on conservative thought, although that’s what arguments from Trump and others continue to get at. The fact that conservative people using social media platforms run into things like algorithms circulating what people actually like and care about and specifically delineated guidelines against violence doesn’t mean there’s a conspiracy. Algorithms and people just not liking things or any other simple feature of the site don’t constitute some kind of conspiracy. Math isn’t out to get you. It’s not that hard.

Trump still keeps pounding in the same line though. Friday, he shared a screenshot of a Facebook group marketed as for union firefighters who support Trump. Although it would be convenient for Trump to again ignore the basics of social media and the internet in general to advance the idea that all the members are union firefighters for him — any account can join a Facebook group. It’s not that hard.
