Trump Makes Dramatic China Announcement On Twitter & It’s Not Good

President Donald Trump is continuing to conduct major global policy via Twitter. This Sunday, he announced that in the coming week, tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars worth of Chinese goods would be going up to 25% in the face of continued, lagging negotiations for a hoped for trade deal. Trump had an unduly optimistic take on the U.S. side of that situation, crediting the income from those tariffs for the country’s current economic “success” although the higher barrier to entry means that fewer products get through and when they do, costs spike for American consumers. In favor of his delusion, he ignored realities of the situation, like ongoing Chinese human rights abuses.

Still, he shared:

‘For 10 months, China has been paying Tariffs to the USA of 25% on 50 Billion Dollars of High Tech, and 10% on 200 Billion Dollars of other goods. These payments are partially responsible for our great economic results. The 10% will go up to 25% on Friday. 325 Billions Dollars of additional goods sent to us by China remain untaxed, but will be shortly, at a rate of 25%. The Tariffs paid to the USA have had little impact on product cost, mostly borne by China. The Trade Deal with China continues, but too slowly, as they attempt to renegotiate. No!’

To be clear, it’s false that the tariffs’ impact on product cost is “mostly borne by China.” American consumers and businesses are affected when the cost of getting something to them goes up and is often translated into higher prices. It’s not that hard.

The trade negotiations that Trump thinks can be solved by shouting “No!” on Twitter like a petulant child have been ongoing for months on end at this point, lagging well beyond a deadline that the involved parties had originally set of the beginning of March. Concurrent to that date getting set, the U.S. and China had agreed to a temporary “cease fire” in their trade war consisting of rounds of tariffs going back and forth — but that “cease fire” seems to be over.

Meanwhile, Trump keeps insisting everything is coming along just fine even to the point of ignoring Chinese human rights abuses in pursuit of his contrived economic “success.” The United States had been pursuing sanctions over China’s detention of as many as millions of Muslims in a crackdown on what it falsely hyped up as terrorism, but those were shelved in the favor of keeping trade talks open. The targeted Muslim communities are continuing to suffer while Trump struggles to accept basic principles of not just economics but math.
