The report that “totally exonerated” President Trump is certainly turning out to be a massive problem for the White House administration, as news reports on Friday revealed yet another astounding development.

For the past month, White House officials have been trying to get Trump’s former White House counsel, Don McGahn, to say publicly that he didn’t believe Trump had obstructed justice. McGahn’s legal firm have said prior to the Mueller report’s release that McGahn believed Trump was innocent and that he had told Special Counsel Robert Mueller so. In fact, McGahn initially “entertained” the idea, indicating that he might be willing to do so.

Then the full Mueller report was released, and McGahn’s testimony was known to the public. McGahn is the lawyer who quit Trump’s team, telling other officials that Trump was asking him to “do crazy sh*t.” What McGahn laid out for Mueller was a clear description of numerous federal crimes committed by the president, as over 700 federal prosecutors have stated.

The New York Times reports:

‘White House officials asked at least twice in the past month for the key witness against President Trump in the Mueller report, Donald F. McGahn II, to say publicly that he never believed the president obstructed justice, according to two people briefed on the requests.’

Trump reportedly had other officials make the request and did not speak to McGahn himself. When Trump was notified that McGahn had refused, he was outraged. Of course, he was already outraged because McGahn told Mueller the truth and refused to lie for the president or to fire Mueller during the investigation.

‘His reluctance angered the president, who believed that Mr. McGahn showed disloyalty by telling investigators for the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, about Mr. Trump’s attempts to maintain control over the Russia investigation.’

The in-fighting between the two has ramped up in recent days, with Trump accusing McGahn of having leaked stories to the media and McGahn walking firmly away from public declarations of support. More importantly, the question should be asked: why ask someone to say that you’ve been exonerated when the Mueller report supposedly already did so?

‘After the report was released, detailing the range of actions Mr. Trump took to try to impede the inquiry, Mr. McGahn decided to pass on putting out a statement supportive of the president. The report also revealed that Mr. Trump told aides he believed Mr. McGahn had leaked to the media to make himself look good.’
