President Donald Trump would like us to believe that he’s sticking up for the military, although in reality, he continues to throw their interests under the bus of his imperialism. This weekend, he tweeted a statement in honor of Armed Forces Day, first instituted by President Harry S. Truman. The statement talks a lot about the supposed great things he’s done for the U.S. Armed Services, ignoring some glaring, lingering issues like his politicization of their ranks via dispatching them to basically do nothing but look intimidating at the southern border.

He shared:

‘Our courageous and vigilant Armed Forces safeguard the blessings of liberty for us and for future generations by selflessly answering the call of duty. Today, and every day, we acknowledge and celebrate all who proudly wear our Nation’s uniforms!’

As some would be prone to point out, it’s ironic that Trump continues to parade himself as absolutely dedicated to the military when he himself avoided service by claiming elusive bone spurs as a health disqualification. He repeatedly derides actual military figures like the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who he insisted was no kind of hero because Trump prefers “heroes” who weren’t captured, as he put it.

The issues go on. Besides dispatching them for a political show to the southern U.S. border, where they’re supposed to confront asylum seekers who pose little to no criminal threat, Trump’s racked the military with the antagonistic politics of his ban on transgender service members. The conservative-leaning U.S. Supreme Court has allowed that ban to remain in place while litigation proceeds through lower level courts.

The issues go on. For instance, amid tumult over the U.S. stance towards Iran, Trump told reporters that he “absolutely” would send up to 120,000 troops to the Middle East to confront Iran, despite it remaining unclear what if any active threat to U.S. interests they actually pose. Trump has simply long maintained antagonism towards Iran as a policy choice, using the lives of tens of thousands of soldiers as little more than political game chips in the process.

He didn’t mention any of that. Check out Twitter’s response below…
