There are structures around the world that are immediately recognizable. Last month a fire ravaged Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral. Parisians watched as the centuries-old church’s famous steeple leaned then tumbled to the ground. Now, another landmark in Paris has caught the attention of the world news.
Authorities closed the Eiffel Tower “until further notice.” The problem this time was an urban climber scaling its side. The notice appeared in French and in English:
‘La
#tourEiffel est actuellement fermée jusqu’à nouvel ordre. Pour éviter une trop longue attente, nous conseillons à nos visiteurs de reporter leur visite. The Eiffel Tower is currently closed until further notice. We kindly advise our visitors to postpone their visit.’
However, Eiffel tower was not always a favorite monument, according to ParisCityVision.com:
‘The Eiffel tower history represents a part of national heritage. It’s as been the symbol of France and Paris for decades. But when Gustave Eiffel achived its construction in 1889, the tower was only meant to be temporary in the Parisian landscape and was far from being the parisians’ favourite landmark. ‘
People were offended that people were trying to scale their monument. JoAnn Schneller tweeted:
‘If they make it. Arrest them. This craziness has to stop.’
Kenya Wilson tweeted:
‘It’s not worth it.’
Scores of people tweeted to see whether their tickets could be refunded. Others wondered how long the tower would be closed, because they either had a tour time or were leaving the country soon:
