At this point, there’s not much that Donald Trump won’t do to distract from the dumpster fire his presidency has caused. Threats against Iran, lies about tariffs, and insults against Fox News…nothing is off the table. On Tuesday, he reverted back to an old complaint about Mexico not doing enough to force people to follow Trump’s commands.
The only immigration crisis that exists at the moment is the one that Donald Trump created. If he weren’t throwing every undocumented immigrant who tries to flee violence and poverty into detention centers, there would be no overcrowding and the cost to taxpayers for those detentions, as well as paying the salaries of ICE agents who are being misused, would not be happening.
The truth is that immigration from Mexico is far lower than Trump wants his supporters to believe. The United States currently has a net negative immigration flow with Mexico, despite Trump’s insistence that every brown person is rushing the border coming to rape and kill us all. Trump knows that his poll numbers are falling, impeachment proceedings are looming, even Fox News is starting to criticize him, and his “promises made, promises kept” slogan is looking more and more like nothing but a campaign sign than a reality. He’s doing what he always does when his support is lagging: pivots to stoking his racist fanbase’s boogeyman fears.
