This weekend, President Donald Trump’s Twitter feed again caught the world’s attention when in the very same post, he praised North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un and slammed former Vice President Joe Biden, who doubles as a presidential candidate these days. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders tried to ascribe some magnificent importance to the president’s tweet to that effect during an appearance on MSNBC’s Meet the Press this weekend contradicting herself and the reality of the situation in the process.

She told host Chuck Todd:

‘Chuck the president’s not siding with that but uh I think they agree in their assessment of former Vice President Joe Biden. Again the president’s focus in this process is the relationship he has and making sure we continue on the path towards denuclearization.’

What path? Trump has met repeatedly with Kim, yes, but they have taken few if any concrete steps towards denuclearization, no matter the concessions that Trump has offered. There’s been a lapse in their missile tests, sure, but this issue has been ongoing for decades and there have been plenty of lapses like this before. They were even reported earlier this year to be seemingly rebuilding a particular missile test facility after their leader’s second summit with Trump ended in a standstill and not even a show deal.

Still, Trump — and Sanders — think that everything is coming along just fine and that the real villain of this situation is Joe Biden, not the murderous dictator Kim Jong Un.

Despite having just a moment previously told Todd that Trump agrees with Kim’s “assessment” of the former vice president, she further explained:

‘The president doesn’t need somebody else to give him an assessment of Joe Biden. He’s given his own assessment a number of times… The president watched him in his administration with President Obama fail for eight years. He’s come in, in two and a half he’s cleaned up a lot of the messes that he left behind. We shouldn’t even be in the position that we’re in to have to deal with North Korea at the level we are if they had done their job in the first place!.. They failed with Iran, they failed with North Korea, they failed on trade, and we finally have a president that’s being tough with these countries.’

Watch:

Apparently then, Sanders measures success by getting closer to nuclear war than in the entire time since World War II, according to one concerned United Nations official. Trump has upped the aggression towards Iran over and over during his time in office, reimposing sanctions, sending potent military assets to the area, and most recently even authorizing a deployment of 1,500 troops — even though his own intelligence chiefs told Congress there was no evidence Iran was poised to be in violation of the nuclear deal they signed with the U.S. and other countries under Obama.

Is that mess what Sanders calls success? What about the U.S. business interests suffering because of his punitive tariff-driven trade wars — is that what she’s referring to as success here? Her passionate adherence to even the president’s most outlandish lines must explain why she’s been around for so long while other senior staffers have packed up and left.
