For the first time since assuming her present, high-profile position as a Congresswoman from New York, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D) appeared on a Sunday morning news program this weekend. In discussion with host Jonathan Karl on ABC’s This Week, the prominent progressive figure passionately defended calls from herself and others for President Donald Trump’s impeachment, arguing that the burden of evidence pushing that direction is only getting stronger.

After Karl asked her about the president’s recent revelation that he was willing to accept foreign dirt on an opponent heading into the 2020 presidential election, she shared:

‘I think every day that passes the pressure to impeach grows. I think that it’s justifiable, I think the evidence continues to come in, and I believe that with the president now saying that he is willing to break the law to win re-election, that transcends partisanship, it transcends party lines and this is now about the rule of law and the United States of America.’

Dozens of her colleagues have already joined Ocasio-Cortez in these calls — and one Republican, Michigan Congressman Justin Amash, has done the same — but for now, House Democratic leadership are continuing to resist.

Figures like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), whose panel would deal with an impeachment proceeding, have argued that pursuing impeachment would only be appropriate in the case of being able to prove to the American people and those on the “other side” that it’s necessary. Ocasio-Cortez seems to directly counter this notion, arguing instead that the transcendence of political lines that Pelosi herself has explicitly argued in favor of while discussing impeachment demands that the proceeding get underway.

Trump has responded to impeachment rumblings by arguing that a case could not get underway because he hasn’t done anything wrong and not only that, the federal government and economy would supposedly crumble without him. He rambled on Twitter last month:

‘Impeach for what, having created perhaps the greatest Economy in our Country’s history, rebuilding our Military, taking care of our Vets (Choice), Judges, Best Jobs Numbers Ever, and much more? Dems are Obstructionists!’

Wishing himself to be the greatest president in the history of the U.S. or whatever isn’t going to make the evidence of his obstruction of justice and potential other crimes go away.

Karl went on this weekend to discuss a new NBC poll — conducted before the nation saw Trump say he’s open to foreign election help — in which 48 percent of Democratic respondents say that Congress should begin impeachment proceedings, which spiked from just 30 percent who said the same a month prior. Although that could be supportive of the Congresswoman’s proposal moving forward — and although overall, only 27 percent of Americans say they believe there’s enough evidence to begin impeachment proceedings right now — Ocasio-Cortez is unfazed either direction. She shared:

‘I think for me this question should not be polls. It should not be about elections. I think that impeachment is incredibly serious. This is about evidence that the president may have committed a crime, in this case more than one.’

Any impeachment proceeding would no doubt stop with the U.S. House considering the ongoing Republican majority in the Senate. As for another way to get Trump out of office and thereby hold him accountable for his behavior though — he continues to lag behind leading Democratic presidential candidates by large margins in polling.
