The 2020 presidential race is getting further underway with the official re-election campaign launch from President Donald Trump this week, and apparently, we’re in for a lot more of the same mess we faced when he ran the first time. On Twitter this Wednesday, he responded to House Democrats having his former aide Hope Hicks in for testimony by complaining about — wait for it — Hillary Clinton! At his kick-off rally, he also presided over the crowd launching into a “Lock Her Up!” chant, so apparently more than two years after he faced her in an election, Trump is still perceiving himself as opposing Hillary Clinton. He really can’t let things go.

He ranted:

‘So sad that the Democrats are putting wonderful Hope Hicks through hell, for 3 years now, after total exoneration by Robert Mueller & the Mueller Report. They were unhappy with result so they want a Do Over. Very unfair & costly to her. Will it ever end? Why aren’t they asking Hillary Clinton why she deleted and acid washed her Emails AFTER getting a subpoena from Congress? Anybody else would be in jail for that, yet the Dems refuse to even bring it up.’

Maybe they’re not asking her about this because it — wait for it — never happened. Although he and close allies like Fox News host Sean Hannity have claimed Hillary personally deleted and “acid washed” her emails before, she did not. An employee of the firm that provided her private server carried out a longstanding directive to delete old emails off the account. That’s all.

Trump’s assertion that “wonderful Hope Hicks” has been put through “hell” is similarly outlandish. She has previously testified before the House and Senate Intelligence Committees, besides her contributions to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe. She’s in a unique position to share insight into the president’s apparent obstruction of justice, which is what the Judiciary Committee wants information about. This week while meeting with Hicks, they got little to none of that, with a White House lawyer sitting in with her pushing the previously claimed notion that she has “absolute immunity” from questions about her time in the White House. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) said his panel was prepared to “destroy” that notion in court.
