It appears that someone has forgotten to tell Trump, as well as his supporters, who exactly he’s running against in 2020. Chants of “lock her up” were revived for Trump’s first rally of the new presidential campaign in Orlando, Florida, even though Hillary Clinton is not in the running.
Trump’s ire has been provoked by the appearance of his former communications director, Hope Hicks, at a congressional hearing investigating the many crimes laid out in the Mueller report. The man who routinely accuses his opponents of breaking the law and calling for their imprisonment is outraged that his own crimes are a focus and that he cannot control the narrative.
Like his witless followers, Trump is still promising to someday “lock up” Clinton while insisting that an investigation that did not exonerate him actually exonerated him. Although numerous investigations led by Republicans found no evidence of any crime committed by Clinton, Trump is still targeting her because he has no real message other than “I hate who you hate.” Without the negativity, he has no connection at all to his base. After all, they’re the voters willing to cast their ballots based on who “owns the libs” and fall for the hateful, misleading rhetoric from Fox News. They need a president who does the same.
It’s unclear whether Hicks will provide any solid answers and has been restricted by Trump from testifying once before. One thing that is clear, though, is this: Hillary Clinton is not going to prison and Trump is beating a dead horse out of desperation.
