Donald Trump is a big fan of the rule of law until it applies to him. For a man with plenty of money to hire lawyers to get him out of all his violations of the law, he’s certainly a fan of locking people up, especially those who have no legal or financial resources to fight it.

With the 2020 presidential campaigns well underway, Trump needs a way to prove to his base that he will be the Great White Hope and enforcer they all wanted him to be in 2016. With no wall completed and no funds coming from Mexico to pay for it, he needs to ramp up the racist rhetoric in other ways, so overfilling detention centers and allowing for human rights abuses against vulnerable brown people must seem like the perfect answer to a man who knows just how happy that will make his base.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration argued in court one day before this Twitter rant to argue that detained children don’t need (or deserve) soap, toothbrushes, or beds. Reports of illnesses, deaths, and abuse don’t faze his supporters, but any suggestion that these detention centers resemble concentration camps sure upsets them. It’s difficult to see how locking people of a particular race in horrifying conditions and submitting them to physical and psychological torture is any different from any other concentration camp, but somehow Republicans will argue in all their manufactured outrage that it is.

Twitter was horrified by Trump’s and his supporters’ glee at the prospect of terrorizing people – people who have been simply living their lives in this country – for no other reason than to score political points. Read some of their comments below:
