In just 24 hours, three very important and damning news stories have been released about Donald Trump and his presidential administration. While any one of the three stories would spell doom for a presidential candidate, even an incumbent one, Trump has all but ignored them, doubled down on his wild claims, and carried on about how he’s the greatest president in history.
The three stories came in rapid succession. The detention centers operating under Trump’s orders are committing horrifying human rights abuses against undocumented immigrants, including children, that have led to the deaths and illnesses of multiple people. Trump began a strike against Iran using dubious justifications and never thought to ask how many people might die as a result of his actions until the strike was well underway. And Trump’s 22nd accuser of sexual assault came forward, a celebrity journalist and author who says that Trump raped her in a dressing room in the 1990s.
Trump says the economy is doing well, and since money is the only thing that matters to him, human rights abuses, capricious and uninformed acts of war, and rape takes a back seat not only for him, but for his supporters.
The president can also ignore the polls if he chooses, preferring to believe that the same glitch in the polls in 2016 will happen again, but it turns out that the country is paying attention to these news stories. How it will affect Trump in 2020 is anyone’s guess, but if the 2018 midterms are any indication, he’s facing a long, uphill battle.
