Donald Trump asked for someone to hand him a baby to take onstage at one of his rallies. He stiff-armed the little girl all the way to the podium, clearly not familiar with have babies are held. She looked at him as if to say “What are you?” Shortly after the photos were snapped for posterity, POTUS quickly stiff-armed her back to a member of the Secret Service. That showed how the president feels about children. How they feel about him is worse, much worse.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) decided that she needed to give Trump some motherly and grandmotherly advice, not for him but for the sake of America’s children. She told the group at a New York city community discussion on immigration hosted by Representative Grace Meng (D-NY), CNN reported:
‘When I spoke to the President, I said “Look, I’m a mom, I have five kids, seven, nine grandchildren and children are scared You’re scaring the children of America, not just in those families but their neighbors and their communities. You’re scaring the children.”‘
Apparently, the two spoke at 7:20 p.m. EDT on Friday. Their conversation lasted 12 minutes. That must not have been all Pelosi said. The next day, the commander-in-chief made the surprising announcement that he would delay a series of Immigration and Customs Enforcement deportation raids for two weeks. He had planned on raiding the homes of people who have overstayed their visas, round them up, and that them to detention camps. Does that sound familiar? No wonder children are afraid.
CNN’s Jake Tapper reported that Trump’s massive raids on immigrants’ and refugees’ had been set to cover 10 of the largest American cities. After two weeks and only if the Democrats have not solved his immigration problems, the president will set the raid back up. The Huffington Post wrote that Trump said:
‘At the request of Democrats, I have delayed the Illegal Immigration Removal Process (Deportation) for two weeks to see if the Democrats and Republicans can get together and work out a solution to the Asylum and Loophole problems at the Southern Border. If not, Deportations start!’
On Monday, Pelosi commented how she felt when she first realized Trump had planned raids:
‘I mean it’s so appalling. It’s outside the circle of civilized human behavior, to just be kicking down doors, splitting up families and the rest of that.’
Pelosi called the president’s immigration plan a “mean-spirited approach,” The Newsweek Magazine reported:
‘Unless they have a warrant, they have no business coming into your home to search. Know your rights… This is not America. This is not what we do to people. We do not break up families because of a status violation. That’s just not right.’
The Senate and the House have scheduled a border funding bill vote this week. First, though, they need to reconcile their two versions of the bill. It seems, neither bill addresses changes in the immigration or the asylum policy. That was Trump’s plan and included both among other requests. According to CNN:
‘The Senate is expected to take up the $4.5 billion border supplemental that passed overwhelmingly out of the Appropriations Committee last week.’
