When the news was released of the arrest of billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, who is charged with sex trafficking a number of underage girls, the name Bill Clinton was almost immediately trending on Twitter. While it is certainly true that Clinton and Epstein were friends and that Clinton flew on his private jet and visited Epstein many times, Trump’s supporters are gleefully using that connection without accepting that Trump is accused of many of the same ties.
George Conway, husband of White House advisor Kellyanne Conway, tweeted a story from Vice News after the new of Epstein’s arrest went public. In the story, the willingness of then-candidate Trump to dredge up salacious stories about his opponents whether or not they had any factual basis. However, he didn’t bring up the allegations between his opponent’s husband, President Clinton, and Epstein.
In the Vice News report tweeted by Mr. Conway, it says:
‘Despite Bill Clinton’s ties to Epstein and Trump’s stated willingness to make Clinton’s sexual past an issue in the campaign, Trump will almost certainly avoid bringing up Epstein’s name. Because in addition to haunting Bill Clinton’s past, Epstein also haunts Trump’s.’
Trump famously gave public statements about Epstein, supporting his friend and calling him “a terrific guy” who simply liked women “on the younger side.” As it turns out, those women weren’t women yet at all; instead, they were underage sex trafficking victims.
‘I’ve known Jeff for 15 years. Terrific guy. He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it — Jeffrey enjoys his social life.’
Trump can avoid discussing the connection, but a lawsuit was filed in 2016 by a woman named Katie Johnson (which may or may not be her real name), who says that Trump raped her at the age of 13 while she was being trafficked by Epstein. The lawsuit was dropped twice and Johnson eventually fled the country due to threats against her own and her children’s lives.
If evidence is released that Clinton was aware of and involved in Epstein’s ring of child sex trafficking, Democrats are going to be more than willing to cut their ties. Many already have after numerous allegations of sexual harassment and rape were lobbed against him. Trump’s supporters, on the other hand, defend him despite the significant number of allegations against him.
If the proof of Trump’s connection and involvement are made public, how gleefully will Trump’s supporters be tweeting about it? For that matter, will any of them believe it or pledge not to vote for him in 2020?
Twitter was quick to react to Conway’s retweet. Read some of their comments below:
