This weekend, the United States national women’s soccer team brought home their fourth Women’s World Cup, beating out the Netherlands for the record achievement. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) weighed in on the achievement on Twitter, adding in a call for them to achieve pay on the same level as their male counterparts operating as part of the same umbrella organization. As a poignant side note, you’d hope that something as clear cut as the national women’s soccer team scoring a record victory on the world stage could bring people together — but President Donald Trump has already lashed out against U.S. women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe, so that’s not exactly on the horizon.
Pelosi, though, shared:
‘Congrats Team USA
#WorldCup2019 Champions! The Women’s National Team showed us their greatness – now show them the money. #fairpay’
The team has brought their umbrella organization to court over their refusal to pay them at the same level as their male counterparts. At times, there’s a dramatic difference in the pay levels — while the fiftieth highest salary in the men’s side is almost a quarter of a million dollars, on the women’s side, pay has already plummeted at that point to only about $25,000 a year.
The other more general issue inherent in the situation is Trump’s past complaints about Rapinoe. He has whined that she joined in the peaceful protest practice of taking a knee during the National Anthem to bring attention to the plight of black Americans. More recently, she said that she was definitely not going to the “fucking White House” in the event of another U.S. World Cup victory, and Trump — again proving seemingly completely unaware of his own “disrespectful” behavior, probably in a feat of willful ignorance — whined on Twitter:
‘Megan should never disrespect our Country, the White House, or our Flag, especially since so much has been done for her & the team. Be proud of the Flag that you wear. The USA is doing GREAT!’
To be clear — Rapinoe never disrespected “our Country, the White House, or our Flag,” no matter how much Trump wants to make American greatness synonymous with his own ego. She spoke out against Donald Trump — and comparing his comments to those of Pelosi’s, the gap in leadership between the two sides couldn’t be more clear.
