The reason that the polls were so wrong about Donald Trump is simple. His base, his hardcore voters are not particularly fond of the government or anything related to it. When interviewers rang them up, this group of people was not likely to give accurate answers. What happened is this great, entity that was hidden just below the surface rose up and helped the president win the 2016 election. This poll, though, is kind of fun.
Statistics are interesting, because they can bend in many directions. In a new poll performed by the left-leaning firm Public Policy Polling (PPP) put U.S. soccer star Megan Rapinoe,34, against Donald Trump, 74, in a hypothetical 2020 presidential election.
The poll found that Rapinoe came in at 42 percent and Trump came in with one percentage point less, 41 percent. Since the poll was primarily for fun, it did not give a margin of error. Assuming that it could have been legitimate, her lead was probably within the margin of error.
There have been similar matches between the president and other potential opponents. Right now his approval rating stands at a consistent 42 percent. He also maintained a 52 percent disapproval rating among voters.
The chances of Rapino running in the 2020 presidential election were pretty low. What the poll did show was that the president should be concerned that any fairly popular candidate could take him down.
The PPP released a statement that read:
‘Rapinoe may be an unlikely Presidential candidate but her numbers still speak to a broader truth about Trump’s standing- the fact that he polls in the low 40s against any Democrat he gets tested against shows that electability concerns are overrated and Democrats should feel comfortable voting for the candidates they like the best, not just the ones they think have the best chance of beating Trump.’
Billionaire anti-Trump activist Tom Steyer, 62, just leaped into the race as Representative Eric Swalwell (D-CA), 38, just took himself out of the running for the 2020 race. He joked that he would be happy to endorse Rapinoe should she decided to join the two dozen runners was a good idea.
Rapinoe famously claimed that she would not go to the White House if asked, “not going to the f—ing White House”. It looked as if she might get her wish given that she had been an avid critic of the president.
Trump has provided his favorite food to members of winning teams, fast food. He tweeted:
‘…leagues and teams love coming to the White House, (and he is s) big fan of the American Team, and Women’s Soccer (but) Megan should WIN first before she TALKS! Finish the job!…with the exception of the expletive — my mom will be very upset about that.
Teammate Ali Kreiger stood up for Rapinoe:
‘In regards to the “President’s” tweet today, I know women who you cannot control or grope anger you, but I stand by @mPinoe & will sit this one out as well. I don’t support this administration nor their fight against LGBTQ+ citizens, immigrants & our most vulnerable.’
