Living in a country ruled by Donald Trump is difficult even on the best of days, but when a real president speaks up, we’re all reminded just how far we’ve fallen since 2016.

On Wednesday morning, President Obama showed off his jersey from the U.S. Women’s soccer team, who just won yet another World Cup. Trump, as proud and patriotic an American as he claims to be, has spent his days ranting and raging on Twitter because one of the stars of the team was critical of him, and his supporters have done what they always do and followed his lead, insisting that the entire team is unAmerican and not to be celebrated.
Obama celebrated them anyway. When they won the World Cup in 2015, the team visited the White House and gifted Obama with his own jersey emblazoned with the team colors and logo and the number “44” on the back. At least one of the current team members, Megan Rapinoe, has vowed not to do the traditional visit now that Trump is in residence thanks to his racist and sexist policies.
Asked about the team’s calls for equal pay, Trump proved Rapinoe right in her assessment of him.
‘I would like to see that, but you’ve also got to look at the numbers. You have to look at who’s taking in what.’
Of course, this completely ignores the fact that the women’s team has been “taking in” an equal or higher level of revenue than the men’s team since 2016 and that they perform better, having won back-to-back titles. They criticized Trump, however, so there’s no way he’ll take their side. Pettiness is his go-to position.
Twitter was overwhelmed with nostalgia hearing from the last real president of the United States. Read some of their comments below:
