After starting his day with a racist attack on freshman Democrats, in which Trump told them to “go back” to their own countries, Democrats stood behind their colleagues and strongly called Trump’s racism and xenophobia out. Instead of backing down, Trump continued his attack on Sunday night.
Trump rose to political prominence with a racist birther campaign against President Obama, and it doesn’t look like he’s letting up anytime soon. With 2020 right around the corner, he has a rabid fanbase to appease, and his attacks on brown congresswomen on the same day that he has brown immigrants rounded up and thrown in dangerously overcrowded detention centers are sure to drive the Proud Boys, the KKK, the neo-Nazis, and the alt-right to the polls.
The same man who made a presidential campaign out of saying that this country is no longer great is somehow suddenly offended by intelligent and well-informed women who have been critical of him and of American imperialism in developing countries. They don’t “hate” Israel, but they do call out the violence of the Israeli government against Palestinians. They don’t “hate” America, either, but they are unafraid to call out Trump and his racist policies.
There is nothing more American than protest and dissent. Without it, there would have been no Civil Rights Movement, no abolitionists, no suffragettes, and no Revolutionary War. Trump could do with some history lessons, because the four women standing up to him today are far more American than he will ever be.
Twitter was disgusted by Trump’s blatantly bigoted attacks. Read some of their comments below:
