Donald Trump has been especially vicious with the legal refugees who cross the U.S.’s southern border. He tortures their children, cold only tear at people’s hearts who thought they had finally reached the land of the free. The torture includes making boys try to sleep while they stood, because there was no room to lie down even on the floor. The White House kept the children’s lights on in windowless cold cages all the time, so they had no idea whether it was day or night. They made children as young as nine years old go hungry. That is what the George W. Bush administration did to detainees at Guantanamo Bay. Then, Trump forced one more rock hard shard of viciousness into the refugees’ hearts.
The president of these United States sadistically told 2,105 immigrants in a dozen cities who had deportation orders that he was going to send squads of ICE officials to pound on their doors and demand they come out. He called the raids Operation Border Resolve. This was the second massive scare. Trump had pulled this before.
What were the results? The results were so minuscule, they nearly escaped the human eye. ICE collected a whopping 35 people.
Acting director of ICE Matthew Albence spoke to The New York Times about the raids:
‘I don’t know of any other population where people are telling them how to avoid arrest as a result of illegal activity. It certainly makes it harder for us to effectuate these orders issued. You didn’t hear ICE talking about it before the operation was taking place.’
Business immigration attorney from San Diego Kimberly Robidoux said that she dealt specifically with immigrant compliance. Several of her clients had been targeted, and she said that Trump’s administration “has been more aggressive” than any other:
‘The Trump administration has been more aggressive than any administration with I-9 investigations.’
Albence said that child detention was limited to 20 days. Border Patrol agents tended to release the families who had crossed the border after they turned themselves over to the authorities. Then, they could wait for their immigration court dates. He added:
‘This highlights the challenges when we are unable to detain individuals at the border and are forced to release them into the country.’
Albence continued, noting that ICE gave the refugees time to put their affairs in order and schedules flights home for them on commercial airlines:
‘What we found is that the vast majority did not even show up for their first hearing, Above and beyond, we sent them letters giving them the opportunity to turn themselves in and arrange for an orderly removal process. Part of our goal is to reduce economic opportunities. We cannot have individuals who come into the country illegally and then go find work illegally.’
