President Donald Trump has seemed in recent days to decide that squalid inner city conditions are the doing of their local leaders, seemingly willfully ignorant of the fact that he technically is also a leader of a place like Baltimore and could be helping. After her father spent days on end whining about Democratic Congressman Elijah Cummings, who represents the area, presidential adviser Ivanka Trump weighed in on Twitter to call for civility — or something. She perhaps completely unsurprisingly did not directly even mention her father’s behavior, but she did call for support for the city. Whoop-de-doo; she can muster basic human decency — where would we be without it?
‘In spring 2017, after visiting the Center for Entrepreneurship at the Greater Baltimore Urban League, I donated proceeds from my book to fund a @NatUrbanLeague Women’s Initiative, incubated in Baltimore, to assist women in starting and growing successful businesses. I encourage everyone to advance smart policy and/or support organizations that uplift the great people of “Charm City”.’
Really, what she’s done here is try and co-opt a national debate surrounding the president steamrolling over concerns of his constituents in favor of making a point. This situation, however, is not about Ivanka Trump. Perhaps thinking otherwise is just the Trump-ian way, though.

It’s true that she donated a large sum of money from the profits of her book Women Who Work. A full $100,000 went to the local center she’s referring to, and the step falls in line with the image that she’s tried to make for herself while on her dad’s team as someone sticking up for women’s rights, or something. She successfully helped spark a global funding initiative from the Trump administration for women’s economic development — but that comes alongside other abject shortfalls, like the same administration cutting off health funding for international organizations that even mention abortion and the best plan she could come up with for paid family leave including recipients subtracting from their eventual retirement benefits.
So like with other Trump-ian story components — this appearance of (metaphorical) chocolate is full of something else entirely…
