After two gunmen shot down 31 people in Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas they became yet another set of statistics. The Republicans hope that the men who used military-grade weaponry would fade away from the public memory as have the 250+ shootings that happened across the country. What is next, then?

A full 200 mayors wrote a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (D-KY) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) after protesters chanted “Do Something!”

It read that our country “can no longer wait” KNOE.com reported:

‘OUR NATION CAN NO LONGER WAIT FOR OUR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO TAKE THE ACTIONS NECESSARY TO PREVENT PEOPLE WHO SHOULD NOT HAVE ACCESS TO FIREARMS FROM BEING ABLE TO PURCHASE THEM.’

The mayors wanted the Senate to vote on the laws that had already passed through the House. Thus far, McConnell has blocked them from coming to a vote in the Senate.

The letter carried the signatures of El Paso, Texas, Mayor Dee Margo; Dayton, Ohio, Mayor Nan Whaley; and any other city where mass shootings have happened. They included  Orlando and Parkland, Florida; Pittsburgh; and Annapolis, Maryland.

Dayton, Ohio Mayor Nan Whaley spoke about the weekend shooting that murdered nine people.

‘THERE IS NO WORSE THING THAT CAN HAPPEN TO A CITY. WE CANNOT ALLOW THIS TRAGIC EVENT TO FADE FROM OUR MEMORIES WITHOUT TAKING ACTION. POLITICS HAS STOOD IN THE WAY OF ACTION FOR TOO LONG, AND I CAN TELL YOU POLITICS SEEMS VERY PETTY WHEN IT IS YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS WHO ARE INJURED OR DEAD.’

Trump told reporters:

‘I CAN ONLY DO WHAT I CAN DO.’

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said:

‘WE DEMOCRATS ARE NOT GOING TO SETTLE FOR HALF-MEASURES SO REPUBLICANS CAN FEEL BETTER AND TRY TO PUSH THE ISSUE OF GUN VIOLENCE OFF TO THE SIDE.’

Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Pat Toomey (R-PA) sponsored a bill to cover the loopholes that now let people drive through it. Manchin said:

‘AT THIS POINT IN TIME LEADERSHIP COMES FROM PRESIDENT TRUMP.’

Those loopholes in the gun laws exceptions are big enough to drive a large truck through. Restrictions could restrict access to guns and ammunition.

McConnell is currently at home in Kentucky recuperating from a fracture of his shoulder as activists gathered in front of his house and his Louisville offices.

Trump has privately been phoning other senators to ask for an expansion of background checks for purchases of firearms. The president has threatened to veto a background check bill that was in the House this past year.

McConnell still appeared to be under pressure from the gun lobby, which has donated generously to his campaigns. Still, the senator was torn when his public questioned him. A full 70 percent of the Americans support an assault weapons ban.
