In 2016, Donald Trump emerged on the debate stage like a piranha in murky river water. His little razor-sharp teeth tore away at his victims aka political opponents until there was just one contender left, Secretary Hillary Clinton. Now, people are looking at the 2020 political stage to see what is different.

In the new Morning Consult/Political poll, two Democrats not only equaled Trump, but they also surpassed him. Both Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and former vice president Joe Biden lead the president.

Biden beats Trump by seven percentage points 42 to 35. However, a full 23 percent were undecided. Among women, Biden also had a seven percentage point advantage, but men only captured a two-point lead.

Among white voters, Trump edged out Biden with a slim two-point advantage. Yet when it came to black voters, the former vice president slammed Trump 69 percentage points to a mere six points.

Sanders also took the advantage over Trump in a hypothetical race by five points. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) tied Trump with each taking 35 percent of the votes.

Biden has had a consistent lead over all the other contenders throughout the early races. Part of that was due to name recognition. Another point was the warm association the former vice president has had with President Barack Obama.

In Biden’s first television ad, he included a graphic pointing out his nine- to 13-point lead over Trump in the most recent polls. According to The POLITICO, the narrator said:

‘We have to beat Donald Trump. And all the polls agree: Joe Biden is the strongest Democrat to do the job.’

Biden’s wife, Dr. Jill Biden did an interview in New Hampshire where she said:

‘I know that not all of you are committed to my husband, and I respect that. But I want you to think about your candidate, his or her electability, and who’s going to win this race.’

Morning Consult’s vice president Tyler Sinclair said:

‘[Biden] would potentially attract the most broad swath of voters across the ideological spectrum in a matchup against President Trump. Our polling shows 38 percent of independents and 9 percent of Republicans say they would vote for Biden over Trump, respectively. Bernie Sanders receives the same level of support among independents but less Republican support at 6 percent, while Elizabeth Warren holds at 32 percent of independents and 5 percent of Republicans.’

However, there was a big drop-off in favor of the sitting president. Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) has been having trouble capturing the black vote even though her father is a black Jamaican and economics professor at Stanford University. (Her mother was an American cancer researcher and civil rights activist born in southern India.) She lost against Trump by a full 10 percentage points.

Other 2020 Democrats competing in the presidential race include Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and former representative Beto O’Rourke (D-TX). They lost in this hypothetical race against Trump by 10 points, too.

The online poll interviewed 1,998 registered American voters from August 16 to 18, 2019. The margin of error was +/- two percentage points.
